Walgreens uses a program called Register Rewards.

Walgreens will offer certain products advertised in their weekly flyer that when after you purchase the product, you get a printout from a machine that is located next to the cash register called a catalina machine. The printout, a catalina, is issued in a specific dollar amount that you can use to offset the price of your next purchase.
This is an example of how it works;
Lets say you buy XXX soap for $3, you pay $3 for it, then you get a printout coupon from the catalina machine that says "$3 off you next shopping order". You can then use this coupon to offset the balance due on your next shopping trip. If you use it to buy another XXX soap, you will not get another catalina printout, but you could use it to buy another product from a different company that gives you another catalina. This is called "rolling" catalinas. This helps with keeping your out of pocket expenses low, as can be seen on my household budget spreadsheet.
The coupon policy linked above does explain all of this. When using catalinas, keep in mind that they are treated just the same as all manufactures coupons. Only one manufactures coupon may be used per item. So, if you are interested in using a catalina and a manufactures coupon to pay for an item, you must be sure to have an item that the catalina attaches too. That means find an item that is very cheap. One of my favorites is getting tomato sauce that often goes on sale for 39 cents with an in ad coupon which you can find in the Walgreens flyer. Other favorites are votive candles, kids pencils, or carmels.
You need to be a bit creative when shopping at Walgreens. It can be tricky and there can be math involved, but once you figure it out, the cost of your health, beauty, and cleaning supplies will be so low that you will love this store.
